For years, researchers struggled to find clear-cut chronic fatigue syndrome causes. Perhaps it was just a convergence of factors, they surmised. It could be part genetics, brain abnormality, hyper-reactive immune system, a virus, infection and psychiatric illness. Scientists had a feeling this tiredness syndrome came about as a result of a moderate-to-serious physical illness or a chronic viral infection that left residual effects within the body. Perhaps depression helped perpetuate some of the symptoms for an extended period of time.

Most diseases have tests that help doctors reach conclusions and make diagnoses. However, chronic fatigue symptoms often masquerade as other illnesses or disorders, so it’s harder to pinpoint it right away. As well, there are no real tests that decisively say “Yes, you have XMRV chronic fatigue.” Instead, doctors look at the list of symptoms for CFS and see if they can check off at least four items, such as fatigue, post-exertion malaise, inability to get nights of refreshing sleep, sore throat, headaches, muscular pain, joint pain and tender lymph nodes.

In 1982, a 21-year-old North Hollywood ballerina named Cynthia Toussaint developed her first chronic fatigue symptom following a hamstring injury. She described her pain as “being doused with gasoline and lit on fire.” Muscle spasms contracted her right arm and leg, folding her limbs up and making her feel constantly fatigued. She had trouble keeping her eyes open and frequently fell asleep in chairs. “I was bedridden for a decade and could barely crawl to go to the toilet,” she told www.ABCNews.com. “They said it was in my head — that I had stage fright or tendonitis from Mars. People said I was making it up.” Eventually she was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome.

There has been some discussion in recent years that severe fibromyalgia and fatigue syndromes are actually the same medical condition. Nearly all fibromyalgia sufferers also report having chronic fatigue (CF) and/or sleeping disorders, for example. In patients who meet the definition of chronic fatigue syndrome, a good portion of them experience tenderness in the joints or muscles, as well as headaches. Both syndromes affect primarily women between the ages of 20-50. Since the root causes are so elusive, patients of either syndrome often join forces to find constructive treatments.

“The cause or causes of chronic fatigue syndrome remain unknown, despite a vigorous search,” writes the Centers for Disease Control. It’s still plausible that the symptoms result from a combination of factors, including genetic, environmental, stresses and toxins. Currently, it’s believed up to one million Americans suffer from CF symptoms. The only way they can be diagnosed is through a careful assessment of their symptoms and by ruling out other serious illnesses or diseases.

Fibromyalgia is defined as a common and chronic pain disorder that can affect people with real, persistent pain throughout the body. It is a condition that was once thought to be psychological because no specific symptom or cause could be identified. Therefore it is called a syndrome rather than a disease. Fibromyalgia is characterized by widespread pain in ligaments and tendons, with painful response to pressure. There are multiple tender points on the body where even the slightest amount of pressure will cause debilitating pain. Today the medical community is inclined to believe that there may be a real basis for the physical pain, which might be the result of prolonged psychological stress. Conquering fibromyalgia is possible, but only with a better understanding of this complex pain disorder.
