How to Manage Diet Controlled Diabetes

A diet-controlled diabetes is one that does not make use of medications to lower blood sugar. Medications called oral hypoglycemics are usually prescribed in conjunction with diet and lifestyle change for those who are diabetic. In a diet-controlled diabetes, oral hypoglycemics are not yet used.
Unfortunately, this theoretical statement is not backed up with a lot of scientific research. Some specialists still prescribe oral hypoglycemics for patients with this diagnosis in spite of the fact that regulating the diet can drastically bring down the blood sugar.

Fish like tuna and salmon contain healthy fat. – Choose a healthy style of cooking. Limit frying with the use of saturated fat oils. Instead, try baking, steaming, roasting, or grilling. If you really want to fry your food, then make sure you use oils that contain healthy fats like virgin olive oil. – Make it a habit to eat food rich in dietary fiber every day. Foods that are rich in fiber include oatmeal, wheat, fruits and vegetables. Bitter vegetables are very effective in lowering blood sugar levels very quickly. – Consume less salt and sodium. – As much as possible, moderately consume food that has high starch content. Rice, potatoes, pasta, cereals and breads easily convert to glucose. One cannot fully omit these in the diet since these carbohydrates gives you energy. Recommended serving is at least 6 to 11 per day.
How the diet modifications affect the individual differs from person to person. A professional dietitian can help the diabetic come up with a meal plan appropriate to his specific needs. Being compliant with medications and treatment, exercising regularly, as well as sticking to the lifestyle and diet modification plan, are always good ways to prevent and manage the illness. Even if it is true that modifying the diet is a big help in diet controlled diabetes, it should not be the only way that the diabetic relies on.
