Postpartum Girdles : Hope Or Hype?

For generations many US women have come to believe that giving birth to a baby meant that the shape of their figure would naturally change from svelte to saggy. Most routinely accepted that after delivery their once lovely figure would be much less beautiful than it was prior to pregnancy. Few new mothers even bothered to dream that they could hope to retain their pre pregnancy figure after childbirth. Then some products started to appear on the market which offered new mothers an interesting possibility. These products, called postpartum girdles or post delivery abdominal binders were designed to bind the abdomen after birth and assist the woman’s body during her postpartum recovery to regain its previous shape.
Although relatively new arrivals to the US market, postpartum girdles have been worn by new mothers for years in many cultures in Asia, South America and Europe. In her book called “Natural Health after Birth : The Complete Guide to Postpartum Wellness”, author Avia Jill Romm writes that the use of a belly band “has been noted world wide as a traditional postpartum practice”.
However, since postpartum girdles are still rather new in the USA, there have been no significant clinical trials done in the USA to determine if postpartum girdles truly work. Due to the lack of clinical medical evidence and also because of their recent appearance on the market, many American OB / GYN’s are understandably hesitant to recommend the use of postpartum girdles to patients who are expecting children. At the same time, in other fields of medicine such as plastic or corrective surgery, similar products with a very similar design and purpose known as compression garments are accepted as standard therapy and are commonly used during the healing process after several types of abdominal surgery.
In spite of the lack of clinical trails, many women are reporting that postpartum girdles help a great deal in the postpartum recovery process to decrease the size of their waistline. Some women who have tried this type of belly bands are reporting that their bodies have almost completely recovered and the postpartum girdles have helped them to regain their pre pregnancy shape. Without clinical studies, it is not possible to be 100% sure what role the postpartum girdle play in the recovery process. It is possible that many women would have regained their figures without using the postpartum girdle at all. However, the historical use of postpartum girdles in many countries around the world combined with the positive experiences of women who have used postpartum girdles are giving many women hope that the thought that they could regain their pre pregnancy shape is not just a dream after all.
